Logistics/Itinerary

There are two options:

A)     We leave at 4am (4:30am-depending on time of the year) for the 2.5 hour drive to Pilanesberg National Park. We will daven Shacharis at a suitable location depending on the situation either on arrival or later. Breakfast will be eaten whilst on the game drive. We spend a lovely day enjoying the smells and sounds of the African bushveld. Mincha and lunch are enjoyed at a suitable spot. We depart the Reserve early afternoon returning back to Joburg late afternoon.

B)      We leave mid-morning for Pilanesberg National Park  for the 2.5 hour drive. Mincha and lunch are enjoyed at a suitable spot. Only certain safari operators in the Reserve have permission to conduct a night drive. So, we have the choice to drive ourselves until the gates close at around 7pm or to pay extra and enjoy the sights and sounds of the night drive which will end at about 9:30pm. We arrive back in Joburg at around midnight.

Info on pilanesberg National park

Thanks to Operation Genesis in 1979, which involved the game-fencing of the reserve and the re-introduction of many long-vanished species, the park now has in excess of 7 000 animals including 24 of the larger species. There are over 300 species of birds in the park.

The crater of a long extinct volcano is the setting of Pilanesberg National Park – a fascinating alkaline complex produced by volcanic eruptions. Pilanesberg is one of the largest volcanic complexes of its kind in the world. Its rare rock types and structure make it a unique geological feature.

We had the just the most amazing and wonderful time on our game ride with Mr Kushner. He was very accommodating about our schedule needs and still managed to give us a very full day in Pilanesberg. His possesses vast knowledge of all the plants, birds, insects, and reptiles, as well as the expected large game animals. Realizing that our group contained some enthusiastic bird watchers as well as others more interested in the Big Five (or 7 or 10), he added birds to the itinerary and managed to keep both groups happy. This was my first trip to Africa, and thanks in part to Mr Kushner’s expertise, I had the time of my life, returning home with a lot of wonderful memories, some great pictures, and a strong desire that this not be my only African adventure. I would strongly recommend him to anyone wanting to plan a trip into the bush, whether just for a day or longer.

On the 30th of January 2012 my 12 year old niece was visiting from Melbourne. I decided I wanted to treat her to a Safari experience. Knowing that to get the most out of such an excursion a trained ranger makes the world of difference ~ animals have their favourite hideouts and there are so many fascinating facts about each creature that lay men just do not know. The best thing happened I asked for Laurie Kushner to assist us. Well all my expectations were exceeded it was a day of note it was one of those days you just thank Hashem for being alive and being totally blessed to be part of his awesome world Yashar Koach hatslocha raba Laurie.

My day trip to Pilanesberg with Laurie Kushner as my guide was an unforgettable highlight of my trip to Johannesburg.  As an experienced guide,  Laurie’s knowledge of the animals, their habits, and the terrain was invaluable not only in finding the animals but in gaining an understanding of their habitat and their interactions. And his photography skills enabled me to take home incredible mementos of my trip. I highly recommend Laurie to anyone who is looking for a safari guide in Africa.

Had a fantastic day-trip to Pilanesberg Game Reserve with Laurie.  It was great to not have to worry about driving to the reserve or the possibility of getting lost once we were inside!!  His knowledge of the fauna and flora enhanced the experience tremendously. Had some great sightings which led to me managing to get some great photo’s to be able to continue to enjoy the day even weeks later.

” I have been to Africa 6 times since 2005, and enjoyed many Safaris. But the best was when Mr. Laurie Kushner was our guide, his encyclopaedic knowledge of nature, coupled with Biblical references, was priceless.

What wonderful memories!”
